In Monday's photography lesson it was my first time that I'd ever found myself using a professional camera and being told a topic that I had to capture photos for. It may have been a new experience for me, but I found the task extremely enjoyable. I also learnt that objects/things in our every day life that would never usually receive recognition, all had 'lines' somewhere within; at least most things did. I found it slightly difficult at first to notice something with lines in that I could take a photo of, but the more I started taking pictures the more I began to spot other objects that were made up of lines. A result of this was the image below that I took a photo of on Monday.

This is an image of leaves, all a variety of sizes and all pointing in an assortment of directions. This was one of my favourite photos because the whole picture has been filled; there's no wasted space. The different shades of green on the leaves is attractive and  displays an array of detail. The shape of the leaves are all in a long line and the lines within the leaves contribute to the formal element. The lines look 3D from the dark shaded areas beneath the leaves which gives this photograph a more edgy feel.




Above is another photo that I took which I believe was probably the worst one out of them all. Although it may include lines in the bricks and cracks in part of the roof along with the wire being identified as a curved line, to me it just looks like a photo with no meaning. Looking at this, I wouldn't be able to guess the topic being 'lines', whereas in the photo above this one of the leaves, I would. The image also doesn't look very appealing which is why I class it as an unworthy piece of photography. 

Progression

If I were to go out and shoot for the topic 'lines' again there is a range of things which I would do differently. Firstly, I would take pictures of lines from different angles. I noticed how from my first set of 'line' photos, that I took nearly every photo from the same angle; faced forwards. A few were snapped from different angles, but only a very minimal amount. Secondly, I'd try to search for lines in a shadow. Shadows can create allsorts of patterns, especially if the sun were to shine through a bench; that would produce lines of shadows which I consider to be quite photographic. Finally, I would use my own camera to go out to my own scenery rather than just the college premises and find a large area of 'lines' which would make up a whole photograph. Some images that inspire me for this would be the ones I have recorded below:

An escalator.

A zebra crossing.

The woods.

A bridge.

So many things in this world contain lines, that you'll struggle being able to find something that doesn't; that's what interests me when it comes to this project.

These 2 images of artwork I really enjoyed looking at because you realise that every single piece of art is made up of lines when you begin to study both pictures. They're both creative and also inspire me to maybe include photos of my art somewhere along this photography course.

I really liked this second picture of a page from a book, with one line highlighted and the rest blurred out because it provides the audience with the one line from that page that holds the most importance while still focusing on the topic of 'lines'.

This image above is of a female wearing eyeliner. I thought the idea was imaginative because it's also captured all of the varied lines surrounding her pupil along with the jet black eyelashes crawling out from her eyes. Lines make up most of this photo which is why i've included it in my image bank.

These final 2 images are both simply pictures of lines. One portraying the life of somebody and the other demonstrating how someone maybe feels trapped, as in they've tangled themselves up in a mess that it's too late for them to get out.

Below are more photographic images that portray line rather than ordinary pictures of something. Both of the photographs portray more than just line, because the first one includes depth and the second one includes colour. They're inspiring and both look relaxing as they're both related to nature.

Four annotated online pictures:

The image above caught my attention immediately. First of all, the colour creates an eyecatching image because the blue cloudy sky bounces off of the pink groups of flowers in the fields. I feel that pink and blue work well together in an image. The lines inbetween each patch of flowers is defined, clear and creative in how they all join together in the distance. The windmill is also a great addition to this picture because there are lines amongst this structure which cross over one another, creating a different feel of 'lines'. 

This black and white picture was another image that covered the topic 'lines' very effectively. The lines of the staircases all spiral down, creating with it a curved line aswell as a continous pattern of straight poles. If you also study the picture further you will notice different styles and shapes of lines carved into the pavement or perhaps made out of slabs; these all make up lines in a creative fashion. This whole image is filled with a variety of lines which I found to be inventive. 



This picture caught my attention because I found it rather clever that these chairs are not literally lines, but when they're all lined up together they create a row of lines. The gap in the back of the chairs are also in pattern with eachother and create an ongoing line of smaller lines. The legs of the chairs are even in pattern with eachother so when you think about it, this picture is filled with chairs, but also brimming with lines.



This final picture capitvated me because as soon as I saw it I noticed that it was a line of people, but also thought "outsider"; the outsider being the person in the red converse. It can be interpreted however you want it to be, but for me I felt that this image exhaled a deeper meaning and not only a 'line' of people. It's a line of people precisely, but also a picture that, in my opinion, portrays how it doesn't matter if you're not the same as everyone else, you're still part of something and you matter. This picture wouldn't be as creative without the person in the red converse, and the line could also go on forever, different people joining along the way; it would always be a picture that demonstrates a line no matter who was involved to create it. 

My definition of 'line': An ongoing mark that can advance in any direction.
