Work Diary - Pattern

Work Diary
Evaluation

In Monday's photography session where I was asked to go out and shoot 'pattern' I was slightly thrownback with the task because I couldn't think what I'd take a photo of. However, when it came to going out and taking photo's I suddenly became all inspired; discovering patterns in places I'd never thought about before. Pattern's are found in all kinds of objects, even shoelaces include a pattern which I have inserted in my 'straight images' post. I found this topic the most enjoyable because I was also able to take photo's of people's clothing which all screamed pattern, along with zooming into leaves and flowers to study the pattern in their structure. It was a very interesting topic and the more I got going with the task the more photographs I accumulated. I'd taken the most photographs in this session than I had in any other session and was very proud with what I managed to achieve. The two photographs below are ones that I took that I thought portrayed 'pattern' very effectively.

This photograph is of a, what I'm guessing, a fan, that I found outside when I was looking up across some buildings. Just circles and lines have been used to make this manmade pattern, and I thought that it was creative because there wasn't many circular objects with a pattern that I was able to find. Sadly, I never managed to edit this photograph so it's not as effective as it could be. The actual object is slightly boring and most certainly not eye catching, however the pattern within the shape is clearly evident, therefore meaning that it covers the formal element pattern.

This photograph is simply of a large yellow flower with petals all curled up and moulded around one another. They circle the middle of the flower evenly as the pollen looks as though it's directly in the middle of the petals. This is an example of natural pattern and from my point of view, it's beautiful. The bright yellow is extremely fresh and the large soft petals create a delicate pattern. I like that the pattern/flower is directly in the centre of the framing so that each corner consists of the background of the subject. There is no wasted space and the colour brings this picture to life.

Progression

Reshooting pattern for a second time would be a delight. I would love to take pictures of my own ideas that I thought included pattern, because I find patterns in clothes and natural things like fruits and plants to be extremely creative and something that not everybody notices, especially with fruits and plants. Close up photographs of a fruit, like kiwi for example, portray an extremely detailed pattern that looks a lot more manmade than some manmade patterns. It's deceiving, and very interesting. Before this project I never would have studied pattern in my fruit before eating it, now I find myself noticing pattern everywhere I look. Because of this reason, I'd love to take my own style of pictures for this topic, inlcuding fruits and plants which demonstrate natural pattern, and pattern prints on clothes which displays manmade pattern. The images that inspire me I have listed below, as these give me a slight idea of the kind of photographs I'd capture if I were to re-shoot 'pattern'.
