Work Diary - Studio Contrast

Evaluation

Shooting the different contrasts in photography today was interesting as it was a completely new and different kind of topic. Using people, I went into the studio and took photos of things that portrayed contrast. For example, a tall person against a small person would be a contrast as it's the opposite; they contrast with eachother. It was a challenge to begin with when trying to decide what kind of photographs to take as we only had eachother as examples for contrast so my choices were limited. I ended up with a decent amount of good quality pictures in the end but feel that there's some I may want to retake. I'd like to use a black or white backdrop next time so that some of my pictures look neutral, rather than having a large pop of colour in the background of every photograph. Below I have inserted two good examples of contrast with my reasons demonstrated in the captions.

This was one of my favourite photographs from the shoot. In this picture, many constrats are visible. Katy is wearing glasses, Vandana is not. Katy has blue eyes, Vandana has brown eyes. Katy has blonde hair, Vandana has black hair etc etc. Their different skin tones also plays a part in the contrast that is being portrayed through this photograph. I also like that I zoomed into this picture so that the viewer focuses on looking at them and their facial features as they're both also looking directly into the camera so it makes the viewer more drawn into their faces. I feel like the frame was used to a good standard and believe that this was a picture that illustrated contrast effectively.

This was another one of my favourites from the studio contrast shoot. Multiple examples of contrast have again been illustrated in this picture, these being the different variations in height and the sex of the person. The backdrop adds a pop of colour to the picture as they're both wearing dark colours. This picture wouldn't look as effective against a black backdrop as Josh's jumper would blend in. I like that they're both facing different directions in this picture, which is also another example of contrast. The only thing that destorys the quality of this image would be the slight crease in the right side of the backdrop but this can be worked around in the studio and perhaps edited out in photoshop.

Progression

To further the quality of my studio contrast photographs there are several things that I'd like to alter in the future. To begin with, there was no male in our group which I felt was neccessary to portray the contrasts such as male and female, short hair and long hair, nail varnish and no nail varnish etc. Having a male in the group would have contributed to many different kinds of contrasting photographs. I stole Josh from his group for a second to take a height photograph, but this was all I was able to use him for so next time it may be a good idea to mix the groups up of different sex. I'd also like to take a number of different styled photographs for example have someone in the foreground and someone in the background to illustrate their different positions. Furthermore, like I mentioned in my evaluation, I'd like to experiment with more plain coloured backdrops to produce more neutral pictures. These would be the factors I'd change if I were to re-shoot studio contrast.
